<h2>Early Life and Challenges</h2><p>Cadence Black's journey begins with immigration, adoption, and the experience of growing up between two cultures. As an adopted immigrant, Cadence often navigated questions of identity, belonging, and language from an early age. While she thrived in the U.S. as it provided stabilty and education, there was always a persistent awareness of the cultural disconnection and the invisible barriers that many immigrant families face, especially those with limited English skills. Long Red Thread came from the recognition of how much language shapes communities and fosters connection and belonging. Many Chinese-speaking individuals in the U.S. face language barriers, to no fault of their own, which can become an obstacle in daily life, whether its navigating social life, workplaces, filling out documents, or self-advocacy. Having spent most of her life between 2 cultures, she realized my ability to bridge that gap and break the barrier for others.&nbsp;</p><h2>Education and Personal Growth</h2><p>Cadence attended a Chinese Immersion International school until 8th grade and continues to take rigourous honors-level Chinese courses to this day. She finds that learning the language has allowed her to stay connected to that part of herself, and as she got older, that connection became something that she wanted to share.</p><p>Through school, community, and self-directed learning, Cadence developed srrong communication, analytical, and leadership skills. This led to the founding of Long Red Thread, an organization centered on language access, cultural navigation, and community empowerment. Visiting a few schools and speaking with instructors can provide valuable insights into what might be the best fit.</p><h3>My Personal Language Journey</h3><p>Being part of a multi-cultural household, my language journey is more complicated.&nbsp; I had to learn English and Mandarin at the same time.&nbsp; On top of that, my Mom is Korean so I also had a bit of that sprinkled in for good measure.&nbsp; Because I was adopted at 22 months, I was pre-verbal but certainly, the first two years of Mandarin exposure were kicking around the parts of my brain that would later make additional Mandarin exposure more easily absorbed.&nbsp; To help with this formula, my parents enrolled me in the Mandarin immersion program at the International School of Denver (ISD).&nbsp; At school, I received my Mandarin education and at home and in my social life, I received my English education.</p><p>I attended ISD from kindergarden through 8th grade. At ISD I was in the Chinese immersion program where I studied for YCT and HSK (The Offical Chinese Benchmark Tests). Additionally, through outside tutoring and other self-study resources I was able to pass HSK 4 and am currently studying for HSK 5. A non-profit called Long Red Thread that is dedicated to help Chinese immigrant families get established and thrive in their new communities.  The name "Long Red Thread" is a reference to a Chinese fable about an invisible red thread that connects us all and that we are fated to meet.  The organization provides relocation services, establishment services such as banking, shopping, and employment, educational services such as English reading and writing - particularly for children, and community development services.  The Executive Director is Cadence Black, herself a Chinese immigrant who started Long Red Thread to help make the integration process as personal and welcoming as possible for Chinese children and families.
