Cadence Black's Journey from Adopted Immigrant to Community Leader
CB
Early Life and Challenges
Cadence Black's journey begins with immigration, adoption, and the experience of growing up between two cultures. As an adopted immigrant, Cadence often navigated questions of identity, belonging, and language from an early age. While she thrived in the U.S. as it provided stabilty and education, there was always a persistent awareness of the cultural disconnection and the invisible barriers that many immigrant families face, especially those with limited English skills. These early challenges shaped Cadence’s understanding of how systems can unintentionally exclude vulnerable communities.

Determined to combat the exlusiveness of these vulnerable communites Cadence came up with the idea to start an organization that would help connect communties that would come to be known as Long Red Thread. Long Red Thread came from the recognition of how much language shapes communities and fosters connection and belonging. Many Chinese-speaking individuals in the U.S. face language barriers, to no fault of their own, which can become an obstacle in daily life, whether its navigating social life, workplaces, filling out documents, or self-advocacy. Having spent most of her life between 2 cultures, she realized my ability to bridge that gap and break the barrier for others.
Education and Personal Growth
Cadence attended a Chinese Immersion International school until 8th grade and continues to take rigourous honors-level Chinese courses to this day. She finds that learning the language has allowed her to stay connected to that part of herself, and as she got older, that connection became something that she wanted to share.
Through school, community, and self-directed learning, Cadence developed srrong communication, analytical, and leadership skills. Continued education on immigration stories, language barriers, and community involvement, helped Cadence grow and develop the foundational skills and desire that led to the formation of Long Red Thread.

Becoming a Community Leader
Cadence’s leadership emerged not from authority, but from the recognition that action had to be taken. Recognizing gaps in support for Chinese-speaking individuals in the U.S. by reaching out to numerous organizations ranging from federal to local level, Cadence took initiative to create solutions rather than wait for them. This led to the founding of Long Red Thread, an organization centered on language access, cultural navigation, and community empowerment. Cadence’s role as a leader is rooted in collaboration by listening to community needs, organizing resources, and building networks that amplify immigrant voices.

Continuing the Journey
Cadence's journey is far from its end. As Long Red Thread continues to grow, so does its comittment to expanding its outreach, refining its programs, and further empowering future leaders within the community. What first began as a personal story of adaptation and challenge has become a shared mission of advocacy and support. She remains an active participant in community development, constantly seeking new ways to make a difference, and delighting in the success of each new family the organization is able to help. Her vision for a supportive, inclusive society continues to guide her efforts, inspiring others to join in the mission.
In sharing her journey, Cadence hopes to encourage others to recognize their potential and take bold steps toward a better future for all.
